Kathy Pruitt Interview
Author: Chris Armstrong | Created: 2008-02-29 16:38:41 | Location: Aptos, CA
Kathy Pruitt is no stranger to the world cup
circuit . She was the 2000 Junior World Champion,
has won the USA National Championship three times
and has been a USA World Championship Team Member
nine times.
Her consistent results are a testiment to the fact
that she is one of the fastest women in the world
and she can mix it up with the boys any day of the
week. We caught up with her via email between trips
around the world.WMB-. You had a strong season last year with great
results, how do you feel about it?
KP- I knew coming
into last years races which events I wanted to show
well in. Sea Otter Classic, National Championships,
Fontana and US Open. Any time I get on the podium
I am proud of myself, even if it's not 1st place.
WMB- What was your favourite event last year?
KP-
It's a toss up between the Gala women's freeride
event and Mount Snow, Vermont.

WMB- Out of all of your
crashes over the years, which one would be the worst?
KP- The time I over cleared a small tabletop while
practicing at the Sea Otter Classic in 2003. I broke
my collarbone, two ribs, separated my shoulder and
knocked my clock pretty bad.
WMB- Did you end up having
a “mental
block” because of it.. Or did you move past
it easily. (I always have to re-ride a crash to break
past it.)
KP- I rarely get the opportunity to re-ride
a crash and visit where it was. Most the time, when
I crash, it wasn't because the section was too difficult
but because I was going race fast. It all happens
so quickly it's hard to put the pieces together as
to why I'm on the ground. I'm not too fussed by it,
I move on.
|
WMB- What type of riding do you
enjoy the most? (ie, tight and technical, fast & flowy
etc.)
KP- I enjoy fast technical, as in you can carry
speed if you line up all the lines. It's fun to zip
past the trees and rocks with such a fine line.
WMB- Favourite course in the
world?
KP- I don't have a favorite
|
WMB- What got you
into riding?
KP- I switched from Moto X to MTBs after
I discovered my parents sold my motorcycles.
WMB- Do
you see gravity racing increasing in North America
to the level in Europe?
KP- If UCI can make it easier
for resorts to host a world cup I believe the US
racing will come back. Interest will be sparked when
Americans see what we do. As is now, the europeans
have every advantage against the Americans at promoting
the sport and racing. They don't have to travel across
the Atlantic, teams can spend less money because
the world cups are held on one their continent. Sponsorship
will be what brings back American mtb racing.
|
WMB- One spot, one bike, one hour.
What would you ride?
KP- Santa
Cruz, Ca on a Jamis Xam 10. What is your favourite
bike to ride? KP- An all mountain bike like a Jamis
Xam with a dual chainring.
WMB- What do you think
is wrong with mountain biking?
KP-If your having
fun and not hurting anyone, whats wrong with that.
Mountain Biking does no wrong.
